EMFACE in San Diego

Serving Scripps Ranch, Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Mira Mesa, and the greater San Diego area.

EMFACE is unusual among facial treatments because it does two genuinely different jobs. It is FDA-cleared for the treatment of TMJ dysfunction and jaw pain, and it is used for non-surgical facial toning and lifting. Most people arrive interested in one and are surprised to learn about the other.

How EMFACE works

Two energies run at once through applicators that simply rest on the skin. Synchronized radiofrequency warms the dermis, which is the layer where collagen and elastin live. At the same time, HIFES technology, standing for high-intensity facial electrical stimulation, contracts the facial muscles far more intensely than they contract on their own.

No needles, no injections, no anesthesia, and nothing to recover from. You lie still for about 20 minutes with the applicators in place.

EMFACE for TMJ and jaw pain

This is the part most people have not heard about. In August 2025, the FDA cleared EMFACE for a specific TMJ indication: relief of symptoms associated with muscle spasm, treatment of TMJ dysfunction and associated pain, muscle re-education, increased local blood flow, and the maintenance or improvement of mandibular range of motion.

That distinction matters more than it sounds. Many devices marketed for jaw pain are being used off-label for it. EMFACE is not. TMJ is a cleared indication, and the clearance specifically names range of motion and muscle re-education rather than just pain relief, which reflects what the technology is actually doing to the muscle.

If you clench, grind, wake with a tight jaw, get headaches that start at the temples, or struggle to open your mouth fully, this is worth a conversation. The usual paths are night guards, medication, injections, and in severe cases surgery. EMFACE adds a non-surgical option that involves none of those, and it can sit alongside the care your dentist is already providing rather than replacing it.

EMFACE for facial lifting and toning

Facial aging is not only a skin story. The muscles underneath thin and lengthen with age, and as they lose tone they provide less support to everything sitting on top of them. Most aesthetic treatments address only the skin. EMFACE works on both layers at once, which is what makes it different from radiofrequency alone.

In the manufacturer's clinical studies, patients completing a standard four-session course averaged roughly a 37% reduction in wrinkles, a 23% lifting effect, and a 30% increase in muscle tone. Those figures come from BTL's own research rather than from an FDA efficacy determination, and individual results vary. Treatment can target the forehead, the cheeks, the area under the chin and along the jawline, and the delicate skin around the eyes, depending on which applicators fit your goals.

Results are not instant. They build as collagen remodels and muscle tone improves, and most people see the clearest difference six to twelve weeks after the last session.

What a session is like

You recline, the applicators are positioned and held in place, and the treatment runs hands-free for about 20 minutes. The sensation is warmth combined with a pulling or tapping feeling as the muscles contract. It is not painful. Nothing is injected, nothing is cut, and you can drive yourself home and return to work immediately.

A typical course is four sessions about a week apart, though the protocol differs depending on whether we are treating jaw dysfunction or working on facial toning.

Is EMFACE right for you?

EMFACE is not appropriate for everyone. Implanted electronic or metal devices, including pacemakers and defibrillators, and metal in the treatment area are among the reasons it may be ruled out, and there are others we screen for. Every patient starts with a consultation so we can confirm that treatment is safe, appropriate, and actually aimed at the right problem. Jaw pain in particular has several possible causes, and not all of them are muscular.

How EMFACE fits with our other care

At Solveris, EMFACE sits alongside Emvital, our laser platform for temporary relief of muscle and joint pain, which can address the neck and shoulder tension that so often travels with a clenched jaw. Where a combined approach makes sense, we will discuss it. Where it does not, we will say so.

Frequently asked questions

Is the TMJ clearance real, or is this marketed off-label?

It is a genuine FDA clearance granted in August 2025, covering TMJ dysfunction and associated pain, muscle spasm symptoms, muscle re-education, local blood flow, and mandibular range of motion.

Does it hurt?

No. Most people describe warmth plus a tapping or pulling sensation from the muscle contractions. There are no needles and no anesthesia.

How is this different from Botox for clenching?

Botox reduces the muscle's ability to contract forcefully. EMFACE uses radiofrequency and stimulation toward symptom relief, muscle re-education, and range of motion. Different mechanisms entirely, and which suits you is a consultation question.

How long do facial results last?

Muscle tone is not permanent. Many patients maintain results with periodic sessions. Your provider will discuss a maintenance plan based on what you see.

Do you treat patients near Scripps Ranch, Poway, or Rancho Bernardo?

Yes, along with Mira Mesa and the greater San Diego area.
